Part 2: The studio.
Building the skinnyCorp podcasting studio has been quite a journey. We started out by placing all of our equipment in a low traffic area in the back of our warehouse. It was nice because it wasn't busy and was far away from all the hustle and bustle that was Threadless' christmas sale. However we totally underestimated the mics ability to pick up ambient noise. Man, those first couple podcasts were FULL of ambient noise. We would be recording an interview and while wrapping it up and doing some post work on it we would end up hearing an entire conversation in between pauses.
As you can imagine this excess ambient noise was annoying and kinda distracted from our already distracting podcast. Charlie decided that it was time to leave the nest and move in to the skinnyCorp area. We surveyed the scene and decided to move him into an empty cubical we had. But.. it wasn't going to be that easy.
The skinnyCorp area is a central ops of sorts for Threadless. It is where Jake, Jacob, Jeffrey, Craig, Ross, Ivan and myself all work. We do coding, Threadless stuff, business stuff and gaming. It is, as cribs would say, where the magic happens. The skinnyCorp area is constantly going though a sound level identity crisis. Some days it is dead quiet whereas on other days Craig and Ross are competing to see who can play the most awesome music while I am standing on my head yoyoing to death metal. But really, most days everyone is just doing their thing and creating a decent amount of noise.
So as you can imagine, this poses quite a bit of a problem. We needed an enclosed studio stat. We looked online at these prefabed awesome sound studios. They have everything you need: sound proofing, glass doors and windows, lots of room and they look like space capsules. They are also quite pricey. So Ivan and Charlie got to talking.
Ivan has yet to introduce himself on our blog but if he were to, I am sure he would tell ya'll how he is our resident contractor and engineer. He is always creating awesome solutions for interesting problems. This time he and Charlie sketched out what is probably one of the weirdest and most fantastic podcast studios of all time. Hah.
So we started with the cubical base. The cubical is not your typical material board cubical you would find at the likes of other places I have worked. It is a room with the top cut off and an opening to walk in. To take our cubical from half room to full room, we simply framed out the remainder of the walls, and added a ceiling. We then started in on the hardest and arguably the most important part: the sound proofing.
Anyone who knows anything about building out studios will tell you that true sound proofing is hard and expensive. We were lucky we didn't know anything about building out studios. We started with one goal to make sure that all the office based ambient noise didn't get into Charlies podcasts. With this simple goal all we needed is to stop our noise from getting past the walls and into the mics. We asked around and all our studio friends suggested carpet and carpet foam to keep things on the cheap. So we got some thick foam insulation and filled our newly framed walls with it. Then we hung and glued carpet padding and carpet over everything. On the outside we placed a dry erase board and carpeted the door. It worked rather well. It deadens all accessory sound inside the studio, and really filters out all the ambient office noise from us skinnyDrones.
We have debuted a couple interesting customizations to our studio all of which involve neon lights. Hah. Ivan had some neon that we placed along the top of the studio making the studio look like a toaster oven. This eventually broke in a rain of glass when Ivan was installing a fan. Charlie was sad. Craig felt sorry for him and brought in his family's surplus video store chain neon lights. It is now much more stable. Has much less glass and is quite p i m p.
